Technote 8 - Disconnecting Users from the Server

If you're having trouble with users connecting to the server, it could be that you're running out of licences.

Genotrack has a two level licencing system:

  • Concurrent Licencing - This means you are entitled to have up to a specified number of people connected to the database at one time.
  • Licence Pooling - you have the option of allocating a specific number of licences (up to the number of concurrent users) to a particular group.

If there is no licence available under either of the levels above, a person will not be able to login.

This technote discusses the procedure of disconnecting one or more users from the server to "free up" licences for use.

Technote 7 - Hardware considerations for operation in an animal facility

If you're looking at running a database management system for your animal facility, there are a number of things you need to think about.

How will it work? How many computers do you need? Desktop or Laptop? Fixed or Mobile? Where do you put them? What other hardware do you need?

This technote discusses a number of factors which you may want or need to take into account when planning for your colony management database.

Technote 6 - Repositioning a window when the title bar is hidden

When running on Windows, you may sometimes find a window open where the upper part of the window is off the top of the screen, or obscured by the title bar, making it difficult to drag to a better position.

This technote explains a key combination that can be used to drag the otherwise immovable window.

Technote 4 - Customising the Genotrack Client - Setting the Server Address

This technote will explain how to customise the genotrack client to point to your server installation.

Once you've completed the technote, your client software will be ready to distribute within your facility or organisation.

Technote 3 - UAC causes crashing, locked files, or inability to save data

Problem: UAC may cause the data file or other application components to appear locked due to permissions

"User Account Control (UAC) is a new security component in Windows Vista. UAC enables users to perform common tasks as non-administrators, called standard users in Windows Vista, and as administrators without having to switch users, log off, or use Run As. A standard user account is synonymous with a user account in Windows XP. User accounts that are members of the local Administrators group will run most applications as a standard user. By separating user and administrator functions while enabling productivity, UAC is an important enhancement for Windows Vista." (Microsoft)

Solution:

Either use the "Run as Administrator" option or place the entire application outside of any of the UAC protected folders.

Affected Platforms:

  • Windows Vista (all editions)
  • Windows Server 2008 (all editions)
  • Beta versions of Windows 7

Technote 2 - DEP causes Application crash

Problem: A known stability issue exists in older versions of Halogenics software where Microsoft's DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is operational.

DEP is a security standard developed by Microsoft to prevent malicious code from being run on a system. If a program tries to run code from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you, whether the code is malicious or not. (Microsoft)

Solution:

DEP should no longer present a problem - the latest releases of all Halogenics Software by default are authorized to execute on systems with DEP protection activated.

For older versions of Halogenics Software, we recommend you add an exception for both the client and server applications, as outlined in the original post below, or contact Halogenics for an update.

Affected Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (32-bit x86)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows Vista (all editions)
  • Windows Server 2008 (all editions)
  • Beta versions of Windows 7
